Mayor Bloomberg indicated his belief that people would be glad to sit in sterile, well lit interiors sipping $5 juices and spring water while chatting in respectful, hushed tones. This new initiative follows on the defeat of a related proposal that would have imposed a 3 drink minimum for passenger cars entering Manhattan. The earlier proposal was largely abandoned when it was realized that many of the logical enforcement points would in fact divert much of the revenue to New Jersery.
Responding to criticism that the move would harm city service and tourist industries, Bloomberg countered, "Hey, it's not like we're banning package stores. At least not yet. And remember we still have some of the finest strippers in the world."
In closing remarks the Mayor further suggested that he considered flavorful and exotic foods to be a growing source of menace.
