In a press briefing this afternoon, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld informed reporters that the Pentagon had lately sought rapprochement with the U.S. on a number of foreign policy fronts including Iraq and the Koreas. While acknowledging that his relationship with the United States had had its ups and downs of late, Mr Rumsfeld further observed that "[o]ur interests continue to dovetail in a surprising number of cases."
Mr Rumsfeld went on to reveal that his special envoy, Paul Wolfowitz, had been in regular contact with figures in the U.S. administration.
As a result of agreements reached in the course of those talks, Mr Rumsfeld indicated to reporters that the Pentagon had determined that "Vice President Cheney is someone I think we will be able work with."
Asked whether talks had been scheduled with the U.S. Secretary of State, Colin Powell, Mr Rumsfeld rephrased the question in such a way as to make the reporter look fantastically stupid and then proceeded to answer another question that no one had asked or much cared about the answer to.
