Pass Mountain Hut (AT Mi: 921.8)
September 17, 2002
(Daily Mi: 13.1) Nice hike today. Leg feels good (still messy tho, and I have to change the dressing daily). Stopped by my first SNP wayside. Strange to come upon a Chevron station in the middle of the Park, but nice to have an egg and bacon sandwich for breakfast. Met a great park ranger who had thru-hiked in '89 and has been working for the NPS more or less ever since. He told me about a short section he did on the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) as well. Liked the sound of using pack animals. Saw 2 bears today (one large juvenile and one full grown). They both took off when they say me (the adult a little slower) Treadway has been real nice: dirt and grass. And the grades are fairly gentle. Still, there is plenty of elevation change.
