Bake Oven Knob Shelter (AT Mi: 1231.1)
Fri, 31 May 2002 04:00:00 GMT
(Daily Mi: 17.4) Exceptionally brutal hike today. The first 3/4 of the hike were rugged but actually kind of satisfying, and I managed to finish the first 13 miles by 2 pm. The last 4 miles, however, took over three hours to complete. First came an evil little formation known as the Knife's Edge. This consisted of giant slabs of rock stacked on edge and forming a spine along the ridgeline. A 30' slide off the ridge to the west. A 60' slide off the ridge to the east. This was followed by Bear Rocks and a final scramble over a massive heap of boulders quite aptly named Bake Oven Knob. Piper and Choo Choo reached the shelter about 20 minutes behind me. We were all pretty beat up and in a foul mood for the first hour or so after reaching the shelter.
