Fingerboard Shelter (AT Mi: 1370.7)
June 12, 2002
(Daily Mi: 14.3) Hot dry hike today. Lots of hills. Little water. The end of the day was particularly bad. Entered Harriman with about 4 oz of water and about 5 miles to go. Held onto what I had until I made it through the Lemon Squeezer (a cool little rock formation about 2 miles into the park) and then hiked desperately thirsty the last three miles to the shelter. Made it just past sunset. Potato Man, Porkchop and Trail Blazed already in. No water at the shelter and a .5 mile hike to a questionable source. I set out down the blue blazed trail and quickly discovered that it was too indefinite to follow in the dark. When I returned empty handed, the Porkchop handed me a dromedary with the last of his water. I declined once but not a second time. Seriously kind gesture as he needed H2O almost as bad as me (will remember that). I leave the Trail tomorrow. I think I am getting back on, but I don't know yet for sure. I am in any case ready for at least a small break.
