June 22, 2002
(Daily Mi: 18.8) Long, hot, humid day with with many a useless NY detour. Spent most of my time thinking about (1) water; and (2) why I am out here 600 miles from Katahdin without my friends.

Hard to imagine making it.

Milky but spiquot fed H2O source at the concrete form shelter. Nearby road access and cell phone allows for pizza delivery. Pipe, Woodman and I order 2 large con carne and Woodman and I have a nice chat by the road waiting for our food.

In a near to spot on repeat of his performance from the previous night, the Apricot stumbled in moments before dark cursing the mosquitos (and Americans in general).

Apricot is a funny creature. Three days and one stop at Costco off a flight from Tel Aviv, his only knowledge of outdoors skills are derived from the Internet.

He is trying to go *ultra-light* (which he pronounces 'oohltra-lite') He has gotten good information but has not quite mapped it to reality. His pack, bag and tarp are properly light weight. However, while all his food is dehydrated he has almost two weeks worth (including 3 lbs. of dried apricots), and he is carrying not one but three ulta-light stoves.

He is both annoyed and apparently completely surprised at the fact of the mosquitos -- which for June are actually quite mild. He announces that from now on he is going to try sleeping during the day and hiking during the night when he believes the mosquitos will be dormant. We observe that this belief indicates he doesn't know much about mosiquitos and suggest he might just try DEET instead.
