ABOUT WBv1.5

WebBug v1.5 is a free visitor IP tracking and reporting service from Sophiaknows. The WebBug's automated Whois? lookup and detailed reports allow designers and content providers to learn who is visiting their sites, how often and where they are coming from.

WHAT IS A WEBBUG?

The WebBug v1.5 takes the form of a standard html image tag with a special source attribute. Instead of a standard image file, the WebBug's special source targets a remote CGI script.

<img src="webbug.pl">

The WebBug is included in a web page by a developer in his or her <html> code. Each time the page is loaded the WebBug sends a request to the CGI script. The script, in turn, logs and stores the visitor's IP registry information and transmits the contents of a single pixel, clear .gif file back to the page.

With each request the WebBug records (1) the requesting IP address, (2) the date and time of the request, and (3) the name of the page from which the bugged image called.

255.255.1.1 5 May 2004 Index

Over time, the WebBug can tell you how many hits your page or pages received, how many were from unique IP addresss, and how often requests were received from a particular IP.

WHAT IS AN IP ADDRESS?

IP addresses are unique identifiers assigned to each computer connected to the Internet (including home users). This identifier, or address, allows a web server, for example, to send the contents of a web page back to the computer that requested it.

IP addresses consist of a series of 4 numbers between 0 and 255 separated by periods ("."): nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn

255.255.1.1

IP addresses are under the authority of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and assigned under the authority of Regional Registrars (RIPE, AIPIC, BOB, and in North America: ARIN) to Internet service providers, and in turn to their end users and customers.

Individual addresses can be assigned to end users long-term (this is typical for T3 and cable users) or temporarilly (which is typical for dial-up customers).
